Micropaleontology workshop

On April 14 and 15th, 2014 a Ellington and Associated hosted a 2-day Micropaleontology workshop. Mr. Ardren Callender instructed the short course entitled Gulf of Mexico Neogene: Selected Cibicides and Related Species. The purpose of this workshop was to familiarize paleontologists with the various Neogene Gulf of Mexico species and discuss their biostratigraphic and paleoenvironmental value. Participants were focused on the species of Cibicides which are often the most common and diverse constituents of benthonic assemblages. They are also often the most poorly identified and mis-described species.

The course was focused on key deepwater lineages covering the Pleistocene – Oligocene. It provided an in-depth overview of the genera Cibicidina, Cibicides, Planulina, Cibicidoides, Hanzawaia and Heterolepa.

The stock of Ellington & Associates, Inc. was purchased by ALS Oil and Gas on April 4, 2014.

ALS (formerly “Australian Laboratory Services”) is a multinational analytical services company that provides a broad range of sophisticated, state-of-the-art services through four main divisions: Minerals (Geochemistry, Metallurgy, Mine Site and Inspection); Life Sciences (Environmental, Food & Pharmaceutical, Animal Health and Electronics); Energy (Coal and Oil & Gas); and Industrial (Asset Care and Tribology).

To avoid confusion, I would like to clarify that ALS Oil and Gas is not an operator or E&P company.  It does not participate in any exploration or production.  The “Oil and Gas” in the name refers to the segment of the energy industry being serviced by ALS.  These services include Coring, Mud Logging, and Laboratory Services among others.  Details on the ALS Oil and Gas Services can be found at www.alsoilandgas.com.

Ellington & Associates, Inc. remains as a separate legal entity and retains its Federal EIN numbers. All work will still be under the Ellington & Associates, Inc. flag.  The organization remains the same.  The staff and I will continue here performing the same roles as before.  We look forward to continue our working relationship with you.

Austin Field Trip

Born from a desire to better understand the stratigraphy of  the Texas Cretaceous,  Ellington & Associates sponsored a field trip to the Austin area on March 22, 2014.  7 outcrops that provided access to the Buda formation, and other Texas Cretaceous strata were visited. Mr. Russell Hinote served as  field trip guide.

The participants, all  employees of Ellington & Associates, were as follows: Mrs. Nancy Engelhardt-Moore, Dr. Maria Antonieta Lorente, Mr. Jose Luis Perez, Dr. David Bord, Dr.Xiuju Liu, Mr. Alan Smith, Mr. Mark Uffindell, Mrs. Karen Bohls, Mr. Russell Hinote, Dr. Llazar Mehilka, Dr. Lihua Ma, Dr. Mohsen Kariminia, Mr. Kaplan Duraj, and Dr. Natalia Tur.

At the following locations, outcrops of Buda, and its overlying/underlying formations were examined and  a systematic sampling was performed for subsequent analysis.

#2 Lamar Blvd. and Barton Springs Road
#3 Mt Bonnell
#4 Cat Mtn on RR 2222
#5 Loop 360 @ Bee Cave Road
#6 RR 2222 East of Four Points
#7 Loop 360 @ Arboretum Blvd

The following photographs (by Mr. Mark Uffindell), illustrate the performed activities at the visited outcrops.

AAPG 2014

2014 AAPG was the best one to date for us. It produced a number of new clients that were interested in our remote Paleo Microscope technology as well as our one week turnaround on XRD and XRF sample analysis. Chromastratigrahy was still probably the biggest draw to our booth.

The photo to the left is Dr. Crystal Pletka greeting customers.

Maria Antonieta Lorente

Ellington and Associates is pleased to announce that Dr. Maria Antonieta Lorente has joined our staff as the manager of Stratigraphic Services.

Dr. Maria Antonieta Lorente

María Antonieta Lorente is a certified petroleum geologist, expert in stratigraphy and biostratigraphy, instructor, lecturer, and international consultant. She received her Geological Engineering and MSc in Sedimentary Geology degrees from the Central University Venezuela and her PhD from the University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

Her expertise in exploration, with a specialization in biostratigraphy and multidisciplinary teams management, was developed through a 35 year career that began at Maraven S.A. with her role as a palynologist, later Head of Geological Laboratories and Stratigraphy Leader. She also was Exploration Planning and Strategy Manager at PDVSA. The last 12 years she worked as International Consultant in Geology and Environmental Sciences.

She was President of the Venezuelan Geological Society, International Councilor at SEPM Board of Directors and Vice President of the International Liaison and the International Regions AAPG Committees. Currently she is a member of AGGEP, SEPM, AAPG and HGS.

Dr. Maria Antonieta Lorente is a published author. You can find information about her works here.

Dr. Nataliya Tur

Ellington and Associates is pleased to announce that Dr. Nataliya Tur has joined our staff as a senior paleontologist.

Dr. Nataliya Tur

Since joining Ellington and Associates, Nataliya has been working to refine the biostratigraphy of the Cretaceous Eagle Ford Formation in Texas, analyzing its foraminiferal assemblages in well cuttings and thin-sections.

She has worked for the last 15 years as a Senior Researcher at the All Russian Geological Institute in St. Petersburg, Russia.

Her specialties include biostratigraphic analysis of Upper Cretaceous Sequences based on foraminiferal species distributions and quantitative analysis of species assemblages in paleoecological reconstructions.

She has worked on the biostratigraphy of the NE Caucasus, Crimea, Central Russia, and the Baltic region. Nayaliya did post-doctoral research at the Smithsonian Institution interpreting planktic foraminiferal assemblages in ODP core samples from the uppermost Cretaceous of the Blake Plateau to create stratigraphic-age models, estimating sedimentation rates, and describing the planktic foraminifera mass extinction at the Cretaceous-Tertiary boundary.
